David Michael Evanczik, 78, of Jamestown, New York passed away January 9, 2023, in Marinette, Wisconsin. David had a kind and genuine way about him and was loved by family and friends. He will be missed by many.
David was born on August 7, 1944, to Pearl and Steven Evanczik. David was the youngest of three children and was a devoted son and loving brother who recognized the value of family and traditions. Known as Uncle Mike to his nieces and nephews, he was never one to turn away an extra treat at a holiday gathering or miss a point in a feisty dollar game of cribbage.
After graduating from Jamestown High School, David served in the US Army and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was proud of his service and was an active member of the American Legion, the Vietnam Veteran’s Association, and AMVETS.
David retired from the City of Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department after years of loyal service. Many of you may remember him from his time at the Allen Park Ice Rink where he could be seen refereeing ice hockey, cruising around on the Zamboni, or sharping skates in the pro-shop. He thoroughly enjoyed his time at Allen Park and built lifelong friendships with his co-workers.
David stayed active and loved being outdoors. He was a motorcycle enthusiast who enjoyed his time out on the road riding his Goldwing. He was also known for his skill pitching horseshoes and served as President of the Falconer Horseshoe Club. Never one to take a break, he kept busy in retirement as a greenskeeper at South Hills and Sunset Valley Golf Courses as well as maintaining the grounds at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
David found a way to combine his love of hockey, horseshoes, and motorcycles with travel. He would often hit the road to referee hockey tournaments, pitch horseshoes with his team, or join a ride to support our Veterans. He also enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas to see the shows and try his luck in the casinos.
David was a caring and dedicated husband, father, and grandpa. His loss leaves a hole in our hearts but we will find joy in our cherished memories.
David is survived by his wife Gayle, his children, Jill (Curt) Anderson, Rhonda (Christopher) Walker, Brian (Sarah) Evanczik, Erin (David) Filighera, and his grandchildren Cora, Lauren, Kate, Noah, and Jack. David was predeceased by his parents Pearl and Steven, his brother Steven, his sister Sonya (Rosdahl) and his son Michael.
David will make his final trip home to Jamestown for inurnment at Lakeview Cemetery this summer. If you would like information on his celebration of life, feel free to contact Rhonda Walker at David.evanczik.col@gmail.com for additional information.
